In her own words
Interview with Vivian Yeargain taken at 2002 family reunion in Dallas.
I was born in Roe, Arkansas to a family of 11. I was the 5th child. My daddy was Samuel Cole
and my mother was Mariah Watkins Cole. We lived on a farm, and chopped and picked cotton.
When we were grown, we all moved different places. The house was sold. I had eight children,
all born in Loanoke Arkansas. I worked at Arkansas Baptist Hospital in Little Rock for eight
years. I've also lived in Widener, Arkansas. I also had a nursery an kept children until I
retired at 63. I also took in laundry. I sewed dresses for my children. I also enjoyed
cooking and gardening. I'm good at rooting new bushes from branches. My favorite flower is
the xenia. I lost three children--one in an auto accident and two to sickness. I took care of
my brother, Cardell Cole when he retired. He lived with me his last years. I always enjoy
my children and grandchildren. They're the boss now. I used to boss them; now they boss me.
Seven of my children attended college. My oldest and two other sons went into the army. My
motto is: If a task is once begun, never leave until it's done. Be the labor great or small,
do it well or not at all. My favorite poem is
Somebody's Mother.
